Before setting out to purchase a blanket for your bed, it is important to be sure of the
size you are looking for. You need the blanket to be large enough to cover the whole bed, whilst not too large so that it touches the floor. Generally you will find that a king blanket is too wide for standard double and queen sized beds.
There are four common mattress sizes, from which you can work out the correct blanket to purchase.
Twin (single bed)
The smallest standard bed sizes, which despite being called a twin bed, is actually only suitable for one person. The dimensions are 39 inches by 76 inches. There is a longer version, called the twin x long, which takes the same bedding as a twin but gives a little extra leg room.
Full (standard double)
The full size is the smallest of the double beds, offering a good option for a single person who likes that extra bit of space. It is a useful size to have in a small bedroom; however for two people it can feel a little small, at 54 inches by 75 inches.
Queen
The queen sized bed is larger than the standard double, both in width and length. Usually the mattress is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. The bed functions well as a double bed, offering a little more room than the standard double.
King
The largest of the standard double beds, which has two common variants; the standard king and the Californian king. These are also referred to as an eastern and western king respectively. The standard king sized bed is usually 76 inches wide by 80 inches long and is the widest bed, making it the most comfortable for two people to sleep in. The Californian king is a little less wide at 72 inches, and two inches longer at 84 inches. The additional length is ideal for taller people. The bedding and blanket sizes for both beds are the same, and no distinction is made between the two in most cases.
Your mattress should still have a label indicating the size, so check this or get the tape measure out and measure the dimensions. You can then select a suitable blanket to put on top, and can choose the correct sheet sizes, quilt and quilt cover.
King blankets are the largest standard blanket sizes and are generally 108 inches by 90 inches. It does not take a math expert to work out that for a queen size bed, a king blanket is going to be far too large, so be sure to choose the correct blanket size. There is some size variation between manufacturers, and whilst a king blanket will fit a king bed, it pays to check the measurements before you buy.
